Formal Analysis Project: "Nimrod," from Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar

Background: Read the Wikipedia article on Elgar's piece, and the 9th variation ("Nimrod"). Great stories!

Listen: "Nimrod," on YouTube

Score: Piano Reduction

Harmonic Analysis: Using the piano score, make a chord-by-chord Roman numeral analysis of the first section of the piece. After that, just indicate chords at important formal articulations (i.e. beginning/end of sections, or at other important musical events).

Formal Analysis: Using Noteflight, Finale, or hand-written manuscript, write out the melody for the entire piece and indicate details of structure/architecture (i.e. FORM!). Show phrases that make up periods or larger sections. Label sections A, B, C, etc. Indicate when repetition occurs. Other formal devices to spot: Introduction, Phrase Extension or Coda (or codetta), and Transitions (or links, episodes, bridge).

For the FORMAL ANALYSIS document, mainly indicate key (and key changes) and Roman numeral chord labels at beginning/end of sections (or modulations).
